Fastned is the first European fast charging company to receive CO2 Performance Ladder certification for ambitious reduction targets

Fastned, the European fast charging company, has received the CO2 Performance Ladder certification, Level 4, from the Foundation for Climate Friendly Procurement and Business (in Dutch: SKAO). Fastned receives, as the first fast charging company in Europe, the certification because of its commitment to reducing its CO2  footprint through concrete objectives and measures. The certification underlines the fast charging company's mission to accelerate the transition to electric mobility and help combat climate change while also focusing on its own footprint.

The CO2 Performance Ladder is an instrument that helps organisations reduce their CO2 emissions. Fastned used the CO2 Performance Ladder to identify where the organisation could reduce its CO2 footprint. It then developed concrete objectives and measures to reduce its CO2 emissions, relative to kWh sold, by 2025 and again in 2030.

Every day we work hard to help drivers reduce their emissions by switching to electric driving. In fact, we avoided more than 96,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2023 alone. In addition, we believe it is important to be transparent about our CO2 emissions reduction targets and the steps we are taking to reduce our own emissions. We also want to challenge the market and players in our value chain to do the same. The fact that we are now the first fast charging company in Europe to achieve this certification, and also the 1500th certificate holder, feels like enormous confirmation for all the hard work.

Emily Eckhous, Sustainability Manager at Fastned

Diving into scope 3
Achieving Level 4 of the CO2 Performance Ladder certification required an in-depth investigation into Fastned’s scope 3 emissions. These emissions come from its own building-, transport- and production-related activities.

This is a topic that many companies are only beginning to touch upon due to its complexities. In the process, with support from Dutch Carbon Consultants, we learned that scope 3 emissions make up the majority of our footprint. To reduce this, we will take measures including investigating less CO2-intensive materials and construction methods to build our stations, and ensuring all our offices are powered by renewable energy. We already provide 100% green energy from renewable sources at our fast charging stations.

Fastned is audited on an annual basis by a third party, DEKRA, to become certified and maintain its certification. The fast charging company must also show progress in meeting its stated CO2 emission reduction targets.

Fastned’s emissions reduction objectives

Objective 1 - Scopes 1, 2 and business travel:

  • By 2025, CO2 emissions/kWh sold reduced by 60% (2022 as base year)
  • By 2030, CO2 emissions/kWh sold reduced by 80% (2022 as base year)

Objective 2 - Scope 3 (rest of):

  • By 2025, CO2 emissions/kWh sold reduced by 30% (2022 as base year)
  • By 2030, CO2 emissions/kWh sold reduced by 60% (2022 as base year)

Details about Fastned’s CO2 emissions reduction objectives and measures are on the company’s website and more information on SKAO and the CO2 Performance Ladder can be found here.

About Fastned

Fastned is on a mission to accelerate the transition to electric mobility. Since 2012, we’ve been at the forefront of European charging infrastructure development, building and operating a rapidly growing network of iconic fast charging stations. Our yellow, nature inspired stations create a welcoming environment for drivers during the 10-15 minutes it takes to charge up to 300 km of range. By offering Europe’s most reliable, convenient and joyful charging experience, we aim to inspire millions to drive on solar and wind energy so that together we can curb climate change. Fastned is listed at Euronext Amsterdam (AMS: FAST).
